FAQS
Do I need a CAMA permit?
Yes, if you are in one of NC’s 20 coastal counties undertaking development in an AEC (Area of Environmental Concern).
What is an AEC?
An AEC is an area that faces greater impacts from natural hazards including storms.
What is considered development?
Development is defined as any activity involving excavation or filling, construction, clearing, altering land or shore.
What is CAMA?
The Coasta Area Management Act (1974) is a law in NC that protects our coastal resources while allowing development.
How long does it take to get a CAMA permit?
The time that it takes to get a CAMA permit varies based on the complexity of the project, but a simple project can take several weeks to permit.
How long until a CAMA permit expires?
Most general permits are good for 120 days and most major permits are good for three years.
What do I need to do after I have the CAMA permit?
After you have your CAMA permit in hand, you must obtain the required permits from your local government and sometimes from an HOA. When all permits are secured, marine contractors can begin working.
Who do I contact if I have questions about the design vs. permitting questions?
If you have questions regarding permitting, contact Coastal Permit Guy. If you have questions after you have obtained your permit, most questions will go to the marine contractors.
